Golden Progress 1- Disney’s California Adventure Update

March 14, 2010

Very sorry for all the various hiatuses that have been going on with this site including the one this past week.  I have had work needed to be done for school and other things I’ve had to do for my parents.  Yes, but fortunately I just got accepted to all five of my colleges I applied to (Champlain, U of Hartford, Juniata, RIT, and Columbia College Chicago) so I will be out of the house by August.

Besides my life, here is our first update to our new “Golden Progress” for the $1 billion dollar construction project for Disney’s California Adventure.  Unfortunately, I haven’t gone to DCA recently so I don’t have any good pictures to show you.  However, many sites, including DisneyGeek have shown pictures of significant progress to the construction.  Here are the updates:

Paradise Pier:

  • World of Color- Construction was completed last month and now they are testing it nightly for its late April opening.  If you are there at night, you may see huge fountain screens rising out of the lagoon, although they usually test it after the park’s closing.  Yep, that’s the World of Color testing.  They have also played around to test the colored lights, other water jets, and fire effects that will be open to the public next month.
  • Paradise Park- This is where a 9,000 person standing area for World of Color viewing will be.  In the center will be fountains where people, especially younger ones, can run through and play in them.  For the last two months, it still looked like a messy construction site with trucks and cement just being spread out.  It was supposed to open in February and then got delayed.  Now, the cement spreading is complete and the dirt areas are filled with greenery including hedges, flowers, and small trees, like an old Victorian standing area.
  • Mickey’s Silly Swings- This is the replacement for the former Orange Stinger.  This is a re-theme to it with a new theme based on the 1935 Disney short, “Mickey and the Band.”  It is now covered with murals on the body, on the top, it is decorated to look like an old zoetrope of Mickey from those cartoons with a statue of Mickey on top of the ride.  This will open next month, around the same time as the World of Color show.
  • The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Adventure- This is the upcoming and premier Little Mermaid Dark ride that will take place in the former “Golden Dreams” building, with the Palace of Fine Arts structure to become part of the ride’s queue, and some of the former car themed Paradise Pier shops by Mulholland Madness.  Construction is progressing a little more slowly for this attraction than others, but it is surely making progress.  They are laying cement, digging holes in the ground to incorporate basement ride scenes, and the framework of the ride’s building is starting to come up.
  • Goofy’s Sky School- This will be the new retheme for the wild mouse coaster, “Mulholland Madness.”  Construction has not started yet like it was supposed to in around January or February, in preparation for its September opening date, but I guess opening will be pushed back to December or so.

Carsland

  • Radiator Springs Racers- The biggest part of this new expansion, Carsland and its main thrill ride, Radiator Springs Racers, that will open behind the Tower of Terror and a Bug’s Land.  Here is the moment you have all been waiting for- the track for the first bunny hill and sharp turn of the ride has been layed out!  There is also visible progress of the ride’s canyon structure, just like the Radiator Springs from the 2006 Pixar movie, “Cars,” that this new land will be based on.

Hollywood Pictures Backlot/Buena Vista Street

  • Red Car Trolleys- The red car trolleys will take people through the Hollywood Pictures backlot from the rethemed park’s entrance (to become Buena Vista Street, a 1920’s LA when Walt Disney first arrived) all the way to the Tower of Terror attraction.  Since the beginning of the year, the “street” of Hollywood Boulevard has been closed off from the land’s entrance to the Tower of Terror plaza.  Because of that, they have opened up a path that connects the Tower of Terror Plaza to a Bug’s Land, so that guests would not crowd the sidewalk as easily if they wanted to get to Tower of Terror from the land’s entrance.

Killer Whale claims the life of SeaWorld Orlando Trainer

February 25, 2010

Around 2pm Wednesday afternoon, Dawn Brancheau, 40, a veteran animal trainer at SeaWorld Orlando was killed by Tilikum, one of the killer whales at the whale show, Shamu’s Stadium.  The Orlando Sentinel said that the 12,000 pound whale grabbed Brancheau by her upper arm, threw her into his mouth, and dragged her beneath the show’s water.  Soon after, the alarm sounded and security came to export tourists out.  Many guests watched this in horror seeing Brancheau’s body in the whale’s jaws and then her bloody face underwater- children were crying and parents looked in horror.  Some of the spectators noticed that some of the animals were fighting and playing around 12:30 pm and would not follow obeys by the trainer.

Brancheau, who has worked at SeaWorld for over 15 years, had a dream to one day become a whale trainer ever since she went to SeaWorld with her family around 30 years ago.  The staff at SeaWorld loved her and in response to this fatal incident, her supervisor, Chuck Tompkins said, “She loved what she did, and she loved being with the animal. And she understood the risk.”

This is not the first life claimed by the whale, Tilikum.  He was one of the three killer whales blamed for the death of another trainer back in 1991, and in 1999, there was another body of a naked man found lying on Tilikum’s back.  Because of this incident, the Shamu shows in Orlando and San Diego had been cancelled for the day.

Universal Studios Singapore to soft-open tomorrow!

February 14, 2010

Very exciting news from Screamscape as we are only a day away from the start of Universal Singapore’s official soft-opening tomorrow (Valentine’s Day)! This will only occur up until the 21st, only from 5pm to 9pm those days.  The park will most likely not have its grand opening until March as expected, but this is still exciting, considering how fast construction went by for this park!  On the other hand, some attractions will still not be open to the public until March or April including the “Lights, Camera, Action” walkthrough attraction and the Madagascar Crate Adventure dark ride.

Two Big Disney Updates- Exciting World of Color preview video and the new “Mobile Magic” for Verizon phones!

February 12, 2010

First off, the Disney Parks Blog just realeased a mobile products as a whole new way for guests with Verizon phones to better experience Disneyland and Walt Disney World.  This was announced back in 2009, but just recently, they finished this project.  One of these is the new products is the “Mobile Magic” application for Verizon cell phones.  To pay $10 for 180 days of usage, it is a pretty good deal.  If you use this app while visiting one of the American Disney theme park resorts, you can find information about the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Attractions with a map on your phone with information including which attractions are closest by to you, basic information about each attraction, and attraction/attraction FASTPASS wait times.  In this app, they also have such things as a Character Finder, a restaurant finder, an attraction (and even restroom and menu item!) search, and even some fun games, trivia, and a list of your personal attraction favorites.  With this “Mobile Magic,” they also now have a new mobile website for the American Disney Park Resorts, which if you go onto your mobile phone browser, you can type in m.disneyland.com (for Disneyland) and m.disneyworld.com.  It is amazing how much info about the parks they have, which include the same information as the Mobile Magic application including attractions, restaurants, wait times, stores, restrooms, and even character meet and greets.  Another new feature along with these is a text to the Disney parks asking them for information.  This means that on your phone, you can just text to “WAIT” and then put the name of the attraction in the text body and they will give you the wait times! Pretty amazing!

On another note, there is now a video of an exciting preview of the upcoming World Of Color attraction (to open in 2 months) at California Adventure’s Paradise Pier Lagoon.  This video shows the new colored light effects and colored fountain effects that will be in the show.

As most of us now know, Universal’s Island’s of Adventure in Orlando, FL is getting a brand new whimsical land for this Spring, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  This land will include replicas of Hogsmeade Village, the Forbiden Forest, and Hogwarts from the movies, and will include attractions based off the hit Harry Potter movies and books by JK. Rowling.  This was announced in 2007 and from 2009 on, more information about the land has been uncovered.  Universal took part of their Lost Continent Land (including Dueling Dragons and the Enchanted Oak Restaurant) to build this land in 2008.  Construction was completed last month with their new tall Hogwarts castle standing proudly and their snow-covered Hogsmeade Village visible.

In Case You have not known, the attractions for this land are:

  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey- the park’s signature attraction in the Hogwarts Castle- this is a dark ride using the new “robo-arm” technology
  • Dragon Challenge- a retheme of the Lost Continent’s Dueling Dragon’s coaster based off the famous Tri-Wizard Tournament scene in the “Goblet of Fire” movie
  • Flight of the Hippogriff- a new junior coaster that replaced the Lost Continent’s, “Flying Unicorn” attraction
  • Ollivander’s- an attraction in the Hogsmeade Village with an interactive experience where the “wand chooses the wizard”

video- there is a computer Hedwig “fly-through” of the land’s concept art and all the actors from the movies discuss the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Update on Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Korea

January 26, 2010

Universal Singapore Logo- image src: disneyandmoreblog.blogspot.com

As Universal Studios Singapore nears its opening date, there are now several videos of the finished park on the Disney and More Blog.  According to Disney and More, the park’s grand opening will possible be as soon as February 3rd (far ahead from the Spring expected date)! The soft opening might be January 28th for “families” of the construction workers who worked very hard for about 2 to 3 years to build this massive park!  Disney and more says that the park should be open “before the Chinese New Year on February 14th”.  The videos posted on the Disney and More blog include construction videos of the park’s areas, various ride testings, and a testing of the Jurassic Park River Rapids adventure.  Before we post our themed banner for the park’s opening, we have to find out the park’s confirmed opening date.

Besides the hype about this massive park opening in about a week to three weeks from now, they recently announced that Universal Studios Korea will most likely be open by 2014.  Disney and More blog has a basic map on there site for the upcoming Korea Park.

Disney Galaxy Blog

January 17, 2010

the new logo for our new "Disney Galaxy Blog"- image src: Mobilethemeparknewscase

Yes, I know that this site has introduced many new blogs that we have stopped doing, but this blog is not just temporary, it’s official! This is our new Disney Galaxy Blog, which is a blogger blog for Disney fans and includes theme parks, theme park construction updates, theme park announcements, and the corporation behind the theme parks.  There will also be Disney movie and entertainment news including that of the movies- Pixar, Disney Digital 3-D movies, and other live action and animated movies from Disney.  We may include some news about the Disney Channel and Radio Disney, but we figured, most people may not want to hear so much about that but more about the Disney movies and parks.  There is a link in our navbar to the new site.

Also, if you were wondering how I made the logo for this site, it was not simply hand-drawing or generating it through a website.  I actually made it using Flash- I found a couple of galactic images on the web (for the site’s Tomorrowland and Epcot related theme- the logo letters are from the Mission: SPACE font) and I put them together, formed a Mickey out of them, typed using my “Mission: SPACE” themed font, and customized it in various ways.

Disney/Marvel deal complete- about the Marvel Superhero Theme Park

January 4, 2010

Back on December 31st, the Disney deal to buy Marvel for $4.24 billion was complete.  The deal was that geographically, the Universal parks in Florida and Japan could preserve their rights to keep their Marvel attractions- but only in these locations.  In California, Disney could eventually put Marvel attractions either at Disneyland Park or Disney’s California Adventure sometime in this new decade.  This is not a problem for Universal Studios Hollywood anymore, as they ended their deal with Marvel in 2007; the park originally featured the “Spider-Man Rocks” stage show (now Creature from the Black Lagoon), a Marvel restaurant, and walk around characters.  This now adds about five-thousand characters to the House of Mouse including Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

Because of this aquisition, Disney has officially bought the rights to construct a massive marvel theme park in Dubailand, near the upcoming Universal Studios Dubailand, which is also opening in 2012.  This park was announced back in August and three attractions have already been confirmed- Flying with Spidey, Fantasticar, and X-Men: Danger Room.  Most theme park fan websites have not discussed this or mentioned this in blog posts/articles.
